Harrogate Councillor Calls On Authority To Press For High-Speed Rail Link

A Harrogate Councillor will tomorrow (Wednesday, September 30) urge the authority to up the fight for a high-speed rail link for Yorkshire.

Coun Andrew Jones, the Cabinet Member for Finance, will use tomorrow’s meeting of the Full Council to ask for backing of his notice of motion which also calls for other rail improvements, including frequent direct services from Harrogate to London.

Coun Jones said: “The recent proposals from the government and Network Rail for high speed rail investment ignored Yorkshire. High-speed rail is a key part of the transport investment that our area needs. It drives economic growth, and replaces journeys that would otherwise have been made by car or plane so is good for the environment too.

“We also need direct trains to and from London and an upgrade in the lines to Leeds and York. This means making the single track sections double again, electrifying the line, improving the signalling and upgrading the rolling stock.”

Coun Jones added: “I hope this motion gets cross party support as transport links are vital for the success for our economy.”

Notice of Motion:

This Council recognises the very positive impact on the economy of the Harrogate District that a high-speed rail line to Yorkshire would have, particularly on the district’s conference and tourism industries, and is extremely disappointed that the recently announced Network Rail proposals favour a routing from London to the North West.
This Council will use its powers to lobby for Yorkshire's inclusion in high-speed rail plans, and for other rail improvements, like frequent direct services from Harrogate to London, and will work with its partners and with the Leeds City Region to ensure that Harrogate District will benefit from such improved transport connections.
