New facilities to encourage our youngsters to be active are being put in place across our area.
The new play area in the Valley Gardens is now open, and has proved very popular with children and parents. This was followed by a much enhanced play area in Boroughbridge, and that is proving equally popular. Both play areas include great new equipment, climbing frames and wires. A new play area is now being developed for Fysche Fields in Knaresborough.
Plus, the numbers using the district’s swimming pools continues to grow. 4,000 children each week take part in the Rainbow Swimming Scheme, and in September at Starbeck Baths another weekly family swim session was added on Saturday afternoons.
Cllr Andrew Jones, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, said, “It is great that we are encouraging the children of our district to be more active with better play areas, in addition to their regular sporting activities. The NHS has published data revealing almost one third of children are overweight, with one in six obese. Encouraging activity is a good way to address this problem.”
The new play areas have been funded by cash from property developers and outside grants, not by local council tax payers.
